-
- Hi everybody,
-
- A chip from my Cipher150 (aka DECstation 150) internal SCSI-2 tape streamer
- just *fried* without any apparent reason, and without any failure from the
- rest of my computer system!
-
- Though of oldish conception (it takes those big 150/250 MB tapes with the
- metal plate on one side), I bought this drive new one year ago and it was
- working very nicely until now.
-
- I disassembled the drive in order to see more precisely the burned chip,
- only 2 x 4 screws were to be removed in order to detach the second PCB board
- where it was located. Around the chip, the board was _blackened_, but having
- carefully cleaned it, I found out the traces hadn't probably been altered.
-
- On the contrary, the chip itself was _completely_ _burned_. In fact, when I
- touched its surface in order to clean it, it became ashes!!!
-
-
- Now I'm in search of the designation of that small chip, in order to try
- to have it replaced (I really hope this will be sufficient...).
-
- It is one small square chip out of six almost identical, and have the
- Motorola logo on it. It belongs to the uppermost row of three chips,
- the other two being labelled "040 T 3055E" and "037 T 3055E". Below is a
- second row of three chips, labelled "003 T 2955", "949 T 2955" and
- "003 T 2955".
-
- The chip have three contacts soldered on the board, and a free extra one.
- Here's a quick ASCII draw (I can provide an uuencoded small JPEG):
-
- _____
- | | one large contact one one side
- #######
- #######
- #######
- ###O###
- ####### three thin contacts on the other one
- I I I with the middle one not being soldered
-
- The place of the chip is labelled "Q4", and the board itself is labelled
- 965723-005 REV02. The streamer used to declare itself as "CIPHER ST150S2/90"
- revision "2.2Q".
-
-
- Any advice, piece of information, electronic address, ..., concerning this
- chip or the whole drive would be valuable. Many thanks in advance.
-
-
- Regards,
-
- Yann
